About this lecture
Johann Sebastian Bach was good friends with the classicist Johann Matthias Gesner, a professor of eloquence who published an edition of Quintilian’s Training of an Orator. With the writings of Quintilian and Gesner at the ready, we can understand the ways in which Bach uses techniques from classical rhetoric in his music.
