About this lecture
Eighteenth-century musicians considered their art a speech without words. Their music was intended to evoke a specific feeling in the listener. In this lecture Jed Wentz, University Lecturer in Leiden and artistic advisor to the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, examines what doctors and philosophers understood by emotions and how composers and performing musicians thought they could evoke these emotions with the help of music.
