About this lecture
In the eighteenth century there was no shortage of music in Parisian theatres. Even plays in which declamation was central were provided with songs and musical entr'actes. Matthieu Franchin sheds light on the close relationship between words and music in eighteenth-century theatre on the basis of a recently discovered score of Le Mariage de Figaro dating from 1789. Beaumarchais’ famous play would later become even more famous as an opera.
