Changes in lute making, ways of composing and the emergence of Parisian salons ensured that lute music flourished in seventeenth-century France. Lutenist Fred Jacobs examines the cultural and historical context in which La rhétorique des dieux was created, a splendid manuscript with lute works by Denis Gaultier.

About the speakers

The Dutch lutenist Fred Jacobs performs with ensembles including The Gabrieli Consort & Players and the Monteverdi-Continuo-Ensemble of the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. He also accompanies Johannette Zomer and Charles Daniels, among others, and gives recitals with gambist Mieneke van der Velden and Baroque violinist Lidewij van der Voort. He has recorded Robert de Visée’s oeuvre for theorbo on the British label Metronome. He teaches lute and theorbo at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. His research, publications and lectures focus on various aspects of the lute and theorbo in the 17th century.
