About this lecture

John Dryden’s Alexander's Feast was already a favourite of the English public even before Handel set the text to music. In terms of content the poem is an ode to the power of music. But its form also tries to demonstrate this power: Alexander's Feast is brimming with declamatory potential. Using historical sources on acting and pronunciation as his guide, João Luís Paixão will declaim the texts that Handel would later make his own.
