About this concert

The French soprano Hanna Bayodi and the Portuguese Ana Quintans join today the Ricercar Consort. The music is by maestro Couperin ‘le Grand’, who just prior to his death had his printer’s licence renewed in order to be able to publish all his music. However, Couperin’s family neglected to pursue the matter, which resulted in the loss of six sets of leçons de ténèbres, among other things. Fortunately, three sets were preserved.

About the performers

The Ricercar Consort devotes itself to performing repertoire from the 17th century. Active for more than three decades, it is generally considered one of the foremost chamber groups in the genre of Baroque music. The Consort’s regular line-up consists of six members, though the number can vary to accommodate the performance of larger or smaller works. The group's name is borrowed from a special genre of 17th-century Italian music that is highly contrapuntal and often involves an organ. The director of the ensemble is Philippe Pierlot, one of the finest gamba and baryton players of our day.
