About this concert

Palestrina and Monteverdi were his fans. The Gonzagas and the d’Estes were his employers. And the Marchioness of Padulla was his Neapolitan patroness. Thanks to his talents Giaches De Wert moved from the region around Ghent where he was born to work in some of the most important Italian centres of Renaissance polyphony. He developed into an international star. The Belgian vocal ensemble Utopia sings his motets and Missa dominicalis.

About the performers

Five Belgian singers wanted to share with each other their experiences of working in renowned ensembles such as Collegium Vocale Ghent, Huelgas Ensemble, Nederlandse Bachvereniging and Capilla Flamenca. The result: the birth of Utopia. This ensemble got off to a flying start in 2015 with their opening concert at the International Summer Academy of Early Music in Warsaw. Their integral recording of the Lamentations of Cristóbal De Morales proved an immediate hit: the international press had nothing but words of praise. In 2017 Utopia were guests of both the Utrecht Early Music Festival and the Festival of Flanders.
