About this concert

In the programme 'The Intimate Diva,' Duo Serenissima, consisting of Canadian award-winning soprano Elisabeth Hetherington and Dutch lutenist David Mackor, focus on rarely performed music from two most infamously rebellious nuns – Lucretia Orsina Vizana and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani, living in 17th-century Italy. Their music is contextualised by the inclusion of liturgical chant, performed in the manner with which it would have been sung in these convents at the time these women were writing their music.

Elizabeth Hetherington and David Mackor perform as Duo Serenissima.

About the performers

Duo Serenissima, based in the Netherlands, was founded in 2015 by the Canadian soprano Elisabeth Hetherington and the Dutch lutenist David Mackor. They specialize in music of the 16th and 17th centuries, performing programmes which range from English lute songs or Italian monody to Venetian opera. Elisabeth Hetherington has received much praise for her research into the original pronunciation of 17th-century English. Duo Serenissima appeared in the Fabulous Fringe of the 2016 Utrecht Early Music Festival, and in 2017 featured in the main programme.
