About this concert

Eustache du Caurroy’s Missa pro defunctis is the most famous funeral mass from the period before the French Revolution. It was performed at the funeral of Henry IV and subsequent Kings of France. In addition to the Mass itself, a royal farewell included various ceremonies, public honours, processions and commemorative ceremonies.

Denis Raisin Dadre and a collective of singers, wind instrumentalists and percussionists place Caurroy’s five-part requiem in a melodious framework that, in addition to processional music and vesper psalms, also includes a funeral oration: a moving hymn of praise intended to transport the listener from desperation to a new beginning.

About the performers

Doulce Mémoire was established by Denis Raisin Dadre in 1990, and is a modern version of what in the 17th century was called a concert des voix et des instruments. The group rapidly secured a place in the world of Renaissance music, thanks to their original and much talked-about programmes. Doulce Mémoire has appeared at leading early music festivals throughout the world (including Boston, Utrecht, Beaune and Saintes).
