About this concert
When in 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg, he started a movement of resistance and renewal that would also translate into music. The texts of the Luther Bible were eagerly used by composers to penetrate more directly and profoundly to the heart of the listener.
Gli Angeli Genève, our artist in residence in 2016, shows in four song clusters how different composers gave shape to the same Protestant lyrics: from Johann Walter to Samuel Scheidt and Dieterich Buxtehude. Starting and finishing points are Heinrich Schütz, the most significant trailblazer for Johann Sebastian Bach.
