About this concert
When Antoine Forqueray appeared on the musical stage, the vehement rivalry between the French and Italian Baroque was at its height. Forqueray’s mission: to counterbalance the Italian dominance in violin literature with an equally excellent repertoire for viola da gamba. French viola da gamba wonder Lucile Boulanger explores the life’s work of this virtuoso and contemporaries such as Corelli and Leclair.

About the performers
Lucile Boulanger began learning the viola da gamba at the age of five with Christine Plubeau. After earning a first-prize diploma at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional in Paris and a postgraduate diploma at the CRR in Cergy, she entered the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse to study with Christophe Coin. She was awarded several international prizes, among which the Bach-Abel competition in Köthen, the Società Umanitaria in Milan and the MA Comptition in Bruges. Lucile Boulanger performs and records with various ensembles and soloists, and with larger orchestras like Pygmalion, Ensemble Correspondances and Les Talens Lyriques. With Arnaud de Pasquale at the keyboard, she recorded acclaimed albums with music by J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach and Graun for the Alpha label. Critics described her CD Mr Forqueray’s Favourites (2018) as ‘irresistible’ and ‘freeing up the viol’.
Pierre Gallon studied harpsichord performance and figured bass realisation at Conservatoire de Caen, and Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Paris. For Pierre Gallon, music-making is first and foremost a collective endeavour. This motivation drives his commitment to renowned ensembles such as Pygmalion, Ensemble Correspondances and Le Caravansérail. He also makes regular appearances alongside fellow keyboard players, performing with Bertrand Cuiller as a harpsichord duo, and with Yoann Moulin and Freddy Eichelberger as ‘Une Bande de Clavecins’.
Claire Gautrot studied the viola da gamba with Paolo Pandolfo at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and baroque cello with David Simpson at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional in Paris. Dividing her time between performing and teaching, she is regularly invited to appear with Le Poème Harmonique, Le Parlement de Musique, La Comédie-Française, Il Nuovo Concerto, La Simphonie du Marais, La Chapelle Rhénane, les Ombres and l’Achéron. Gautrot teaches at the Conservatoire Maurice Ravel in Levallois-Perret, Paris. Her research into sound production, articulation, and vocal style aids her ability to create a strong sense of character in her performances.
