About this concert

During the High Baroque, woodwinds were used to mix separate timbres. But they also made a name for themselves as soloists. From Telemann’s impressive catalogue of works, Ensemble Odyssee has chosen a concerto in which two recorders spar with stringed instruments. The flute is also given a leading role in Christoph Graupner’s dance-like Ouverture in F major. Oboe and violin double in a concerto by Bach that had almost been lost.

About the performers

The core members of Amsterdam-based Ensemble Odyssee are Eva Saladin (violin), Anna Stegmann (recorder), Georg Fritz (oboe) and Andrea Friggi (harpsichord). The young Baroque ensemble performs early music in various formations, from chamber music to orchestra. Their first CDs have been devoted to unknown Neapolitan repertoire from the 17th century, and they have also recorded music by Woodcock, Babell and Ariosti. As a chamber music ensemble Odyssee has been a prize-winner at the International Van Wassenaer Competition.

Eva Saladin is a violinist. She studied with Kees Koelmans and Lucy van Dael at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and with Leila Schayegh and David Plantier at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, where in 2013 she was awarded her masters diploma in Baroque violin summa cum laude. Saladin studies and experiments with historical playing techniques and styles, as well as with ornamentation and improvisation. She leads Ensemble Odyssee, based in Amsterdam, and is co-leader of both the Baroque orchestra La Cetra in Basel and Gli Angeli Genève. She also performs with ensembles such as Il Profondo and Profeti della Quinta. In addition, she is involved with the collective Studio 31 which performs Early Baroque and contemporary repertoires. Saladin was artist in residence of the Utrecht Early Music Festival 2021.
