About this concert

7 May 1747. Johann Sebastian Bach had barely set foot in Potsdam when Frederick the Great asked him to improvise on a long and complex theme. Back in Leipzig, Bach developed this royal theme even further in his Musikalisches Opfer. Jan De Winne, Evgeni Sviridov, Anna Camporini and Lorenzo Ghielmi focus on the ricercares, canons and the trio sonata for flute, violin and basso continuo from this prestigious collection.

About the performers

The name of the orchestra Il Gardellino is derived from Vivaldi's concerto of the same name, in which he portrays the colourful goldfinch in music. Il Gardellino was founded in 1988 on the initiative of oboist Marcel Ponseele and flautist Jan De Winne. The orchestra does not limit itself to the big, well-known names and masterpieces, but also revives unknown repertoire.
