About this concert
We like to do things on a grand scale at the Utrecht Early Music Festival, but it doesn't often turn out to be quite as massive as this concert with Les Ambassadeurs ~ La Grande Écurie. With four orchestral suites, the 70-strong orchestra is aiming for an evening of exuberant musical entertainment à la Versailles, where important occasions were celebrated in breath-taking splendour.
King Louis XV pulled out all the stops for the wedding of his grandson, the Count of Artois. His 'surintendant de la musique' François Francœur was given carte blanche to provide the luxurious dinners with a perfect soundtrack. The result: sparkling orchestral pages distilled from the operas of Mondonville, Rameau and other iconic masters. Their compositions are given a festive look, tailored according to the latest fashion, entirely to the taste of a royal court situated between Baroque, Rococo and Classical.

About the performers
Two renowned ensembles come together in this company. La Grande Écurie and La Chambre du Roy, founded in 1966 by Jean-Claude Malgoire, caused a stir at the time by choosing to play period instruments. After Malgoire's death in 2018, the musicians of La Grande Écurie chose Alexis Kossenko, at that time the leader of the Les Ambassadeurs ensemble, to take over the baton. In 2020 the merger became a fact.
Frenchman Alexis Kossenko is currently fulfilling a successful double career as a flautist and conductor. As a player he feels at home on various types of flute, from the baroque recorder to the modern transverse flute. Among other things he was first flautist in Philippe Herreweghe's Orchestre des Champs-Elysées. As a conductor Kossenko leads the amalgamated ensembles Les Ambassadeurs - La Grande Écurie. He has been a guest conductor with, among other ensembles, Holland Baroque and Concerto Copenhagen.
