About this concert
The aristocracy’s dreamlike parties in the country were a rewarding theme within the field of Rococo painting. This fête galante style, with Antoine Watteau as its standard-bearer, inspired French poet Paul Verlaine a century later to write his iconic book of poetry Fêtes galantes. British star soprano Carolyn Sampson and her regular pianist Joseph Middleton present an anthology from Verlaine's collection in settings by composers including Debussy, Fauré and Hahn.
