About this concert

The young ensemble Moirai gives expression to two Anglo-Norman lays – short, narrative poems – as recorded by the courtier Marie de France. The twelfth-century poet heard these epic tales performed by Breton minstrels and translated them into the language of the court, so that they would be 'remembered forever'. Ensemble Moirai proves that these lays can still excite us.

About the performers

Ensemble Moirai, led by Hanna Marti and Mara Winter, specialises in music from the Middle Ages. Moirai aims to reconstruct a lost musical tradition and, by working with only the text and a few musical clues, comes close to the approaches and the creative process of the medieval musician. In this way the ensemble creates meeting space for two cultures separated by time: the music of the past and the listener of the present.
