About this concert

Before the history of the viola da gamba was locked up, the instrument experienced a final peak period thanks to Carl Friedrich Abel. Until a few years ago only 30 sonatas of his spectacular solo oeuvre remained. But after recent discoveries, 38 finds could be added to the catalogue of works without any problem. Gamba genius Paolo Pandolfo opens the treasure chest in a breathtaking recital.

About the performers

Together with violinist Enrico Gatti and harpsichordist Rinaldo Alessandrini, gambist Paolo Pandolfo began his research into the repertoire of the Renaissance and Baroque around 1979. He studied with Jordi Savall at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. From 1982 to 1990 he was a member of Jordi Savall's ensemble Hespèrion XX. Since 1990 he has taught at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, while his performing career takes him all over the world. With improvisation, transcriptions and composition of modern pieces, Pandolfo builds bridges between the past and present, in the belief that the ancient music heritage can be a powerful source of inspiration for the Western music tradition.
