About this concert
Soon she will rise like a phoenix from her ashes, Paris' Notre-Dame. Le Concert Spirituel, itself a pinnacle of French culture, sings the stars from the heavens in this homage to the cathedral: a tight weave of Gregorian chants and grand neo-Gothic choral music from the turn of the last century.
Camille Saint-Saëns was celebrated as recently as 2021 to mark the centenary of his death. This summer the celebration continues with his Pentecost Oratorio and the Messe à quatre voix. While Léo Delibes delivers the graduale of this imaginary celebration of mass with his Ave Maris stella, Charles Gounod closes the ranks with his Messe Vocale 'in the style of the Sistine Chapel' and Les sept paroles de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ: a magisterial passion set to a Bible translation from his own hand. A genuine journey in time to the (neo-Gothic) musical life at Notre-Dame just over a century ago.

About the performers
Hervé Niquet founded Le Concert Spirituel in 1987 with the aim of breathing new life into the French grand motet. Thirty-five years later, he has made a name for himself as one of the very best experts in the interpretation of Baroque music, rediscovering both known and unknown works by European composers. In addition to Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet also conducts several orchestras and at opera houses around the world. From 2011 to 2019, Niquet was musical director of the Flemish Radio Choir and first guest conductor of the Brussels Philharmonic. Together with soprano Véronique Gens, he received numerous awards for their album Visions. In 2019, he received the honorary prize of the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik (German Record Critics’ Award) for the quality and diversity of his recordings.
