About this concert

High Renaissance with Cantar Lontano... that wine needs no praise. Still in doubt? Then we add that the outstanding singers with Marco Mencoboni dedicate their L'homme armé passage to Francisco Guerrero. His Mass for four high voices further spices up the already spicy Iberian polyphony recipe with the ingenious incorporation of the illustrious song as cantus firmus. Gregorian chants and a selection of Marian motets complete the menu.

About the performers

Cantar Lontano was founded by harpsichordist Marco Mencoboni. The ensemble made its debut at the Early Music Festival in 2007 with Diego Ortiz’ Vespers, and has since been a welcome guest in Utrecht. Cantar Lontano pays special attention to using the space in which the ensemble is performing, which means that each concert turns out subtly different. Mencoboni and his Cantar Lontano were artist in residence at the 2019 festival.

Marco Mencoboni is a harpsichordist, organist and musicologist. He is active as soloist and continuo player in several Italian ensembles. With his Cantar Lontano, founded in 2007, he aims to drag unknown Renaissance composers out of obscurity. He was artist in residence of the Utrecht Early Music Festival 2019.
