About this concert

The most flamboyant Shakespeare dramas and the most expensive Netflix series pale in comparison to Monteverdi's last opera, especially when it deals with the human struggle for power and seduction, from bedroom to political arena. Under the bloodthirsty young Roman emperor Nero, nothing and no one can stop the rise of his power-hungry mistress Poppea.

Early Baroque composers wanted to bring the theatre of Greek and Roman antiquity back to life. Monteverdi became one of their leading figures. Centuries later, we know that their quest for the past created a spectacular new genre, which also had a rich future ahead of it. Le Banquet Céleste now provides the contemporary revival... of a 16th-century revival piece.
