About this concert

An enchanting evening in Rome, 1686. On the Piazza di Spagna, a spectacle unfolds that only the Eternal City can offer. Trumpets, drum rolls and joyous salvos – a salute to Louis XIV! With more than 50 musicians on stage, we follow in the footsteps of the enormous orchestra of baroque god Arcangelo Corelli for this opening concert. The cantata that Alessandro Melani wrote especially for the royal procession will also be performed, in a reconstruction by Emmanuel Resche-Caserta. With concerti grossi and trio sonatas by Corelli, an extraordinary happening is resurrected: the kind of festive noise that would later inspire Handel to write his own fireworks music.
