About this concert
Emperor Leopold I was fond of the lyrical bravura style of composers such as Biber, Kerll and Pandolfi Mealli, who fused folk elements, intense colours and technical feats into pure aural splendour. Their grandiose sonatas will be played by baroque violinist Lidewij Van der Voort and keyboard expert Bart Naessens, who will serve us a generous portion of music for duo.

About the performers
For baroque violinist Lidewij van der Voort, brilliant declamation and natural phrasing are the basic ingredients of honest and uncompromising music-making at the highest level. During her study of modern violin in Amsterdam, her attention increasingly turned to earlier repertoire. A master's degree in baroque violin with Sigiswald Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels was a logical step. Van der Voort played with all the major European baroque ensembles, such as Musica Antiqua Köln, Capriccio Stravagante, the Netherlands Bach Society, the Academy of Ancient Music and The King's Consort. She was a founder member of New Dutch Academy, Holland Baroque and B'Rock. Nowadays, with duo partners such as Fred Jacobs (theorbo) and Bart Naessens (harpsichord/organ), she focuses mainly on chamber music from the seventeenth century.
Bart Naessens studied harpsichord, organ and conducting at the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven and Paris conservatoire. He is a respected continuo player with an excellent track record with ensembles like Il Gardellino, Collegium Vocale, the Flemish Radio Choir, the Nederlandse Bachvereniging and B’Rock. Bart has recently been earning himself a growing reputation as conductor of his own ensembles, such as BachPlus and Capriola di Gioia. He has been pronounced Klara Musician of the Year 2020, and he took office as director of the Municipal Conservatory of Bruges in May 2021.
