About this concert
Uplifting the soul through simplicity and purity: that was the motto of the Modern Devotion, a spiritual movement that preceded the ideas of the Reformation. Le Miroir de Musique holds up a mirror to history with a selection of fifteenth-century manuscripts chronicling a wide range of music for prayer services. The programme’s leitmotif is the work of mystic Thomas à Kempis: a key figure within Modern Devotion, who is also said to have been active as a composer.

About the performers
Le Miroir de Musique, directed by Baptiste Romain, specializes in the music of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, from the golden age of the troubadours to the humanist movements of the 16th century. Most of the ensemble’s musicians are graduates of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. The name of the ensemble is borrowed from Jacques de Liège’s compendium Speculum Musicae (Mirror of Music), one of the most extensive works about music of the Middle Ages.
