About this concert
The imperial Prague of about 1350 was a melting pot of Carolingian traditions and Ars Nova. While Guillaume de Machaut and his contemporaries were creating a new sound, Charles IV clung on particularly to the heritage of his legendary predecessor Charlemagne. The Czech Tiburtina Ensemble sketches a double portrait of these two historical heavyweights, with Gregorian chants for the anniversary of Charlemagne, medieval organa and polyphonic motets.

About the performers
The female vocal ensemble Tiburtina, based in Prague, is under the direction of Barbora Kabátková. The group was formed in 2008 by former members of the Schola Benedicta. Their repertoire consists primarily of Gregorian chant and medieval polyphony, but also features contemporary music. The Tiburtina Ensemble is especially interested in a correct declamation of text based on research into contemporaneous theory and musical practice.
