About this concert
A frolicking centenarian with no sell-by date: the Netherlands Bach Society is one of the most renowned and authoritative Bach institutions of our time. With sparkling counterpoint, profound affect and razor-sharp performances, the collective manages to keep Bach's music amazingly fresh.
As the festival's artist in residence, this Utrecht ensemble is ready to go with a festive opening spectacle based on a historical example: a concert organised by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in 1786. This most famous of the Bach sons provided a resounding tribute to his father, but also let his own voice be heard. The jubilant sounds of C.P.E.'s Magnificat will grant our musical high summer its most refined starting signal ever!

About the performers
Founded in 1921 to perform Bach’s St Matthew Passion in the Grote Kerk in Naarden, the Netherlands Bach Society has over the past century grown to become a leading vocal-instrumental ensemble of national and international significance. In 2018 violinist Shunske Sato was appointed artistic director of the society. The whole of Bach’s oeuvre for everyone: that is the mission of the Netherlands Bach Society. The video project All of Bach, among other things, was created in that context.
Shunske Sato is the artistic leader of the Netherlands Bach Society, as well as concertmaster of Concerto Köln. Since 2013 he has been a faculty member of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He has performed as soloist with prominent American, European and Japanese orchestras and has many CD recordings to date, including the world’s first recording of Paganini’s Caprices on a historical instrument. Born in Tokyo, Shunske immigrated to the US at the age of four. He studied at the Juilliard School in New York, Conservatoire National de Région in Paris and Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. His teachers include Dorothy DeLay, Gérard Poulet and Mary Utiger.
