About this concert
Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion moves hundreds of thousands of concertgoers every year. To Bach’s unworldly music, dramatist Thomas Höft – in 2019 still co-curator of the Utrecht Early Music Festival – has written a new text that drags the score into a universal no man’s land, somewhere between secular practice and committed experience.
The author shifts the focus from the church to the city square with a scenario based around events that took place in Utrecht in 1730 and 1731, when the persecution of homosexuals degenerated into the notorious Utrecht sodomy trials, many of which ended in execution. Together with top soloists, ĀRT HOUSE 17 gives expression to a message that needs to be heard today.

About the performers
ĀRT HOUSE 17 is a new ensemble led by Michael Hell. In addition to the use of historical instruments, the ensemble believes it is important to do justice to the broader context in which the music was performed. The central question here is: what does music have to say today.
Harpsichordist and recorder virtuoso Michael Hell is professor of harpsichord and basso continuo at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. His extensive concert activities as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra leader have taken him through all of Europe, America, China and Japan. After ten years as one of two musical leaders of Neue Hofkapelle Graz, he decided to start a new group: ĀRT HOUSE 17, which combines the different genres of art even more deeply.
