About this concert
The pages of the richly illuminated Mechelen Choirbook come to life in a programme that runs from Lent to Easter, via Pierre de la Rue's ingenious Missa Paschale. In it, Margaret of Austria's favourite composer achieves the impossible: a polyphonic construction forged around two existing melodies. Utopia Ensemble frames de la Rue's contrapuntal tour de force with a selection of works by contemporaries Gaspar van Weerbecke, Josquin Desprez and Pierre Moulu.

About the performers
Five Belgian singers wanted to share with each other their experiences of working in renowned ensembles such as Collegium Vocale Ghent, Huelgas Ensemble, Nederlandse Bachvereniging and Capilla Flamenca. The result: the birth of Utopia. This ensemble got off to a flying start in 2015 with their opening concert at the International Summer Academy of Early Music in Warsaw. Their integral recording of the Lamentations of Cristóbal De Morales proved an immediate hit: the international press had nothing but words of praise. In 2017 and 2019, Utopia were guests of both Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht and the Festival of Flanders.
