About this concert
Old music? New music? In Proverb, Steve Reich cheerfully throws that distinction overboard. With a text by Wittgenstein – a single thought, endlessly considered – and a wink at Leoninus, figurehead of the Notre-Dame school, he creates a sound world in which medieval organum and minimalism stubbornly mirror each other. Thirty years after the European premiere of Proverb at Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, Reich’s sound lab returns, now accompanied by works from the era of the cathedral builders.

About the performers
The ensemble La Fonte Musica was founded by Michele Pasotti and specializes in the interpretation of late medieval music, with special focus on the Italian Trecento. A vital element in this is philological research, which involves returning to the roots of medieval polyphony, exploring the deeper meaning of the texts and the musical choices present in the compositions. The name of the ensemble alludes to the fountain, a topos in medieval poetry, a place of regeneration and life, and a symbol of pleasure. La Fonte Music was artist in residence during Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht 2025.
